More than 20 years ago, I walked into the Cross Training Club of Westwood. Simply, it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. A friend had lost a ton of weight following childbirth and had recommended Tim Buchanan. More than two decades later, cross training has allowed me to keep dancing well into my 50s, maintain my weight and develop muscle, not fat. Plus the Cross Training Club is a family that I treasure. Thank you Timmy and Jimmy. Please keep pushing me so I‘ll be dancing for another two decades!

In January of 2019, my mom had become ill and needed lots of help- between that and running my house of 6 kids, I needed something for me. A good friend, Dana Tanner, offered me a gift card to the CTC of Westwood. She said it was a great workout in a fun atmosphere, with a great trainer and nice people. I didn’t know how I could fit one more thing into my already crazy days, but I went anyway. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. Here I am, 21 years later, feeling fit and strong! I have been able to climb high mountain peaks, bike and run hundreds of miles, move heavy objects, take care of my yard and carry around grandkids! I am so thankful for Tim Buchanen, (and Jim Favrow)- for their dedication to my health and fitness over all these years! Also, I have met some of the greatest people there that are my dear friends! I could go on and on…, but it boils down to this, I love the Crosstraining Club and it has made a world of difference to my health and happiness in life! LONG LIVE THE CTC!!!!

I've been a member at CTC of Westwood for 6 years and have found it to be the best fitness center and program I've ever had. From the time I bought free weight at Sears in high school until I joined CTC I've alway had an exercise program with running or bicycling for stamina and some improvised version of strength training. CTC provides me the best combination of cardio and strength training than I ever dreamed was possible. Even better, Tim Buchanan and Jim Favrow both use imaginative sets of circuit training that are never boring or repetitive while keeping an eye on me and the other Crosstraiers to be sure that good form is used to reduce risk of injury and increase training benefits. They have attracted a fantastic membership with everyone interested in getting better fitness in a relaxed and supportive community. Their music playlists are varied and energizing as are the playlists that CTC members bring in, particularly for the Thursday afternoon class. When the CTC closed in the COVID-19 lockdown earlier this year I found it impossible to get the same intensity of training and the same enjoyment I get when I'm with my Peeps at CTC.

As a cardiologist, I have been tracking the medical literature centered on fitness and health since my training years as an internal medicine resident. It's increasingly clear that 150 minutes of moderately vigorous exercise weekly reduces risks of some forms of cancer and heart disease with recent studies showing that the vigorous physical activity that we get at CTC provides extra benefit. The benefits continue even into those years of life when going to CTC can reduce muscle loss but unfortunately doesn't slow hair loss.
